How long does it take to get used to fruit?

I've bought loads of differnt nuts and dried fruit and have been drinking a glass of orange and lemon juice in the evenings (made from 2 or 3 large whole oranges and 1 whole lemon). Lovely jubbley!
The nuts and dried fruit is for the mornings (because I dont normally eat breakfast) and afternoons to avoid eating buscuits, cakes and chocolate at work!
And the orange and lemon juice is to try and fight off colds as I had no end of them in 2007 (DD1 has been bringing them back from nursery).
The thing is, its playing hell with my guts! Thought I'd picked up the winter vomitng bug this afternoon because... well... you probably dont want to know.
So my question is, how long will it take my system to get used to this change in its diet?

This happened to me when I decided that no fruit was probably not a good diet.
As soon as I introduced fruit my stomach felt full of acid and I felt quite ill but it did pass. I'd say it was a week or so, perhaps 2.
If I were you I would leave out the lemon in your juice for a while and have no more than 2 oranges perhaps with some water added til your body gets used to it.
Also, don't have fruit on an empty stomach - I still can't do that unless its with a handful of nuts - I quite often have a handful of apricots and brazils for breakfast these days

Try some live yogurt to line your stomach, it has lots of friendly bugs that will help as well... you sound like you don't have much else to lose

beware aware that whilst nuts are packed full of various nutrients, they also tend to be very high in fat (even the ones that are not salted/roasted etc). so do watch just how much of these you are consuming. everything in moderation :j
as for fruit, all the extra fibre can play havoc downstairs, and it can take a while to settle down. it's your body getting used to the change. long term, the results will be worth it. with fruit, remember that the advice is to eat a rainbow - generally, the wider the range of colour (ie the more variety in the type of fruit you eat), the wider the range of vitamins etc.know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Thanks Frugal, thats better than I'd hoped, I was expecting a month or two. I'll try and cut back on the amount of lemon, but I really love them! I could quite easily go and squeeze another one with a couple of oranges right now... so nice! Hi Ephemera, does greek yogurt count? I quite like that. With a bit of honey in it I could see myself eating it for brekkie. Or am I supposed to eat it before my orange and lemon juice?
pavlovs_dog, I thought that might be the case. The problem is I've go no will power when it comes to food. If I fancy something to eat, I'm will find someting to eat, hence the dried fruit and nuts in lieu of commericial snacks and buscuits. That said I am finding that I like fruit. its ok, i can empathise, as im (once again) in a position where im thinking more carefully about what i choose to fuel my body with. my downfall is all the crap thats left over from christmas. we have an obscene amuount of chocs that we received as gifts, and we cant even give them away because everyone else is also fed up of chocs post christmas :rolleyes:
other snack ideas...
grapes are really nice frozen - very refreshing
bananas when frozen take on an almost ice cream like consitsency (peel, wrap in cling film, freeze).
apples always seem to taste nicer when sliced and cored
banana is very nice on toast. its a low GI food. if you make toast with wholemeal bread, better still!
crackers/ crisp breads are good in moderation. just be careful what you top with. peanut butter is good, because of the health benefits of the nuts, but can be very high in fat. less is more.
water - will often take away any hunger/snack craving you thought you had.
cereal is a healthy option (not just for breakfast), and you can easily introduce all sorts of fruit.
chilled fresh pineapple/mango/melon - possibly the greatest indulgence on earth. yum yum! tastes far too nice to possibly be good for you

my greatest downfall when it comes to snacking seems to be a lack of patience. when im hungry, i want food and i want it yesterdayfor me the secret to staying on course with healthy snacking therefore seems to be prepare in advance, so that i can just grab and munch. the same might be true for you. less likely to reach for the biscuit tin if there's fresh fruit salad waiting for me in a tuppaware pot in the fridge.

Veggie juices are very nice too (don't knock them until you try them, I shuddered at the thought of carrot, celery tomato and apple but YUM!!!!!!!!!!), even as a breakfast or lunch alternative and I don't find them as rough on the tum as the fruit juices. Have a look for a book called "slim for life" by Jason Vale, the Juicemaster, there are loads of gorgeous receipes in the book._________0

Perhaps it would be best to avoid too much citrus fruit all at once, it can have that effect. Sorry but I wouldn't mix it with yoghurt either (curdling - yeurgh!)
If possible eat the whole washed fruit (apples,pears,grapes.plums etc) it will give you more fibre and fill you up quicker than juices. Exotic fruits such as melons, mango and pineapple are delish but are often higher in sugar (not a bad thing if it prevents you snacking on cake, choc and biccies). Fresh pineapple incidentally is good for the digestion.
Be wary of too much dried fruit. It's easy to eat loads of RTE apricots or whatever but will have catestrophic effects at t'other end :eek: . Also very high in sugar.
Best of all, eat fruit in season, it's less expensive.

Yes...I knew prunes were good for constipation, but had no idea that dried apricots would have the same effects. I was just thrilled that the baby was eating fruit.....
