i thought the NHS dental plans were in 3 amounts, it doesn't matter what your treatment they can only charge you one of three amounts. Maybe it's worth having a look into.
sorry about the tooth by the way, good luck

Hi - would be interested in any more information that appears on this thread. I am on a low wage and have not been to the dentist for over 6 years now - I have some discoloured teeth and a stumpy bit of molar left after a crown fell off (again) - I accompany people I work with to go to the dentist - which they get for free because they have disabilities - I myself have been (a) unable to find an NHS dentist and (b) too frightened to go and find out how much a private dentist would cost. I know there is an emergency dental clinic at the hospital - but you have to be in pain to go there. What if you can't afford dental insurance - like me for instance? I don't think I have a dental training hospital nearby - I'm sure I would have heard of it if I had.

  • Hi there, myself & my family go to a dental college which is part of Portsmouth Uni after our dentist went private & we couldn't afford denplan.
The building is brand new with all the latest equiptment the students are supervised throughout & are very competant anyway & although it takes a bit longer, I feel that they are definately more thorough & took a lot of care teaching my children how to brush thier teeth properly, which the dentist never did! & it was FREE
I'll admit it can be difficult to get on the list as they do sometimes have a wait, I think it depends on when you apply, we applied in July just before term started & had no problems at all.
    Hope this helps someone;)

  • Hi - I also am having treatment at my local Uni in Cardiff. Apart from saving me a fortune I cannot sing their praises high enough. I contacted the dental department direct and they said they would contact me. I had an appointment within a couple of months. It does all depend on what you need doing and whether they have any students covering this work in their course that it might be that you need to wait. I had my last appointment in November and my next one isn't until February. I am not in any pain, purely cosmetic, so can wait. Due to the type of work I am having, I have become an example for their coursework. The treatment I have received has been brilliant, always overlooked by a senior person, and even had some stuff done which I have never encountered before. I cannot recommend this way of treatment highly enough and it's all completely free. I just need to give up my time and petrol to get there!!

Good luck and hopefully you can find the right treatment at the right price (preferably for free!)

I think my nearest university college for dentistry might be Plymouth - your posts certainly inspired me to go and find out more - Plymouth would be do-able from where I live.
