Civil service Maternity pay.

Hi I wonder if anyone can help.Basically, I'm 24 weeks pregnant and have been in the civil service for 5 years now.Due to downsizing, in october I had to leave one civil sevice department and Join another one.Now in my letter of employment with the new civil service organisation, It states that they recognise my previous service as there was no break in service and they are treating it as continous service.

I have to fill in my application for maternity leave/pay and basically If you've served at least a year, with the new department the form says, your entitled to 6 months full pay-otherwise it the usual 90% for 6 weeks and so forth. Now I assumed I would'nt be entitled to the full pay option, but a previous work collegue said that I would, as that is the whole point of people staying within the civil service-to keep their benefit entitlement and that they have to honor all entitlements.

My line manager has no idea what the stance is and H.R have yet to respond to my email sent on monday.Does anyone have any experience or knowledege thought on this-cheers in advance.

  • Hiya. I'm an HR Manager for a Govt Department.

Your length of service should be recognised as including the previous service, ie the 5 years. That's the same with any department when you transfer ;) So you're definitely entitled to full maternity pay.

    Congratulations, and good luck. :)

**oooh, unless you've told them you won't be returning afterwards, in which case you'll just get your SSP entitlement

Thanks a lot for your reply. So do you think it best that I just attatch a copy of my terms and conditions letter when I fill in the form? As they ask your length of service on it-with their department. Thanks again-very much appreciated.:D

    Can't hurt ;)

If it's anything like one of the departments I work with, it's probably a very good idea!

Hi India, what was your outcome-were you entitled to it, at the full rate for 6 months?
