want venetian blinds to keep room dark

We currently have a blackout roller blind in our bedroom and I would like to replace it with a venetian blind. I can't sleep unless the room is dark hence why we have a blackout blind at present. I am planning to go back to work so may have to do the occassional night shift so will need a dark room for sleeping during the day. DOes anyone have venetian blinds that keep the room dark. My son had a wooden one in his bedroom but that isn't dark enough for me! We have metallic in the kitchen, but that is a very sunny room. Are bedroom is blue if that helps.

  • Venetian blinds let more light in than blackout blinds. The problem with blinds is that there is always a gap between the blind and the wall that lets the light in and if your room is south facing like mine you'll need sunglasses to sleep :p
I suggest you either choose curtains with blackout fabric or have interior shutters fitted.

    Hello rev229

A far cheaper (money saving:D ) option would be to wear an eye mask in bed. I've got some freebie eye masks, courtesy of my Virgin Atlantic flights.;)

Purely in the name of research, I've just tried my eye mask on.

With the room well lit, I could only make out a small amount of light when looking down my nose.............so they would definitely keep the room dark enough for you to sleep.;)

If you don't have an eye mask (and don't know any friends who could let you have theirs), I agree with the suggestion by Van1971 about blackout curtains.

To cope with night shifts, we have blackout curtains attached to our bedroom curtains. They block out the brightest sunlight and ensure the bedroom is dark during the daytime.

I can highly recommend them, if you can't obtain an eye mask.

    Regards

I have blackout curtains as well as the blackout blind because I have to have a really dark room to sleep, I also have a blackout blind in the en-suite and when I worked nights I had to put a pillow along the bottom of the bedroom door! I guess the idea of a venetian blind is out then! Have an eye mask but it really annoys me! Strange thing is I can sleep in the car during the day and in the lounge but not in brd unless it is dark.
