Having bought a Sony HT-LS40 in the Argos sale for £55 quid (ex display got another £20 knocked off) I can recommend this as a quality receiver as it does DTS and Dolby Pro Logic and Pro Logic II amongst other outputs and is a FM/AM radio receiver too.

I brought the Acoustic Solutions DS1233 from argos earlier this year for £179. Been very pleased so far, but I'm not an expert in this field and haven't had any other surround sound system before so I can't compare it to any other. I did find a few reviews online by searching in google. May be of help to you.

I bought the Sony Sony STRDE495 amp from Richer sounds a short while ago for £100, it's now £120 but is very good.  Tannoy FX 5.1 Speaker System from the cheapest website I could find at £170.

Admittedly a bit over your budget but both websites are well worth a look at.  Feel free to PM me with questions about either.

There are quite a few cheaper amps and speaker packages at the Richer Sounds website.

Philips LX 700 surround sound receiver is available boxed brand new in some comet stores for a humble £99.

Has nice flat speakers 2-3 cm thick are wall mountable or free standing.

There is also a Panasonic XR-15 Package that they do but slightly harder to come by...costs a little more but not sure exactly.

Both warrant a look at as they are both DTS 5.1 PLII

Philips has 1 digital coax and 1 optical input and rca audio inputs....same with panasonic but has 2 optical inputs.

  • If you want top quality and an award winning and no supermarket tripe go for the

    Acoustic Energy Aego P5

A little over your budget but an amazing sytem and any hi fi buff will tell you its a very respectable sytem.

Have a look in the Richer Sounds Clearance Section, there's some big savings there by the looks of it, but you'll have to research some reviews...
