Deferred Local Government Pension.

I have a pension with the LGPS which is deferred since I left the Authority in 2004.

If I were to work for them again, on a temporary contract for six months a year, ...

a) would I be able to pay into the scheme and
b) would it make any difference?

I only paid into it for ten years, some of it part-time, and would like to increase it if I can. I cannot take it without penalties until I am 65.

I will be 58 this month but probably 59 or 60 when I do the work. I'm hoping to join their in-house temping pool when we return to the UK. Each temping job is a minimum of six months. I'd like the other six months free to travel and visit our house in Spain.

Hope someone can help!

You'd find the employment income would be taxable in Spain because you are resident there for tax purposes. Employer's contributions would doubtless also be taxable in Spain because this is not a Spanish pension plan, so you would need to budget to pay Spanish tax on these contributions.
  • I would be resident in the UK if I did this. We intend to be resident in the UK again in the next 1-2 years.

I think what will happen is that if you re-join the local authority you will offered the chance to join the pension scheme. Assuming you join you will get a fgorm a few weeks later inviting you to transfer in any previous pensions. This moust be done in the first year of employment.

The only possible problem I can see is the six month contract. I suspect you may not have the choice to join the pension scheme on such a short term contract. I may be wrong on this as legislation has moved on lately.
    Scrum down.
  • Thanks Reg!

I rang the Pension scheme today.

Apparently I will be able to join the scheme - the six-month contract makes no difference as they work it out on full-time equivalent.

Whether it makes any difference depends on how much I earn. If I start on the same grade or higher as when I left, then it is to my advantage to join the scheme. If I am on a lower grade then it may not be beneficial to join.

The nice young man I spoke to said to come and ask them when I have got a contract and they will advise me. So that is what I will do.

I have no other pensions apart from a State Pension to come in two years' time.

    Thanks for your reply.

Currently, anyone working for a local authority is automatically put into the LGPS (except Teachers and Firefighters who have their own schemes) with the exception of casual employees, who have to opt in.

From 1st April a contract has to be for more than three months to be in the scheme, so your six month contract should mean you will be brought into the scheme automatically.
  • Thank you CAE for your reply, that is useful to know.
