Presents for grandchildren

Do you have a fixed amount to spend on each grandchild? Do you buy toys, clothes or give money, or a mixture of both? Most children seem to get too much today so should we cut back or save the money for them? I've decided to cut back on presents and put money into their child trust funds. Their parents have said that they're happy with that solution.

As a mum, I'd have no problem with that at all.
I've got three little ones, and the number of presents that have been given to them is barmy. Hubby and I have already said we're not buying so much next year, and I'm going to ask family to do the same. And, as you've said, if someone still 'needs' to do something, pennies in their bank account is a great option.DFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0 -
That sounds like a very good idea.
Was talking to my OH god daughters parents before christmas asking what does she want (she is only two), they said she has that many toys that they keep some of them in the attic for a couple of months then swap them for what she has in her room and she thinks she has new toys....
So ive decided not to buy her anymore toys.March 2006 £15,200+ in debt April £843.64 in debt - Debt Free date Sept 2009

as a grandchild I have always loved presents, now when i earn money on my own it is difficult as I can see, if you dont have much money, there are stuff that doesn.t need so much to spend0

I have three grandchildren now.............twins, boy and girl, 15 and baby born last June.
The twins live with their Mum and have so much bought them - I used to ring up their mum and ask what they wanted and she'd reel off a list of things way out of my price range. Then I rang them and asked them and they quite openly said 'we've got everything we want nanny, don't worry, anything will do' They have a birthday at Christmas as well so twice the expense so I allowed myself £20 for each of them ...........pressie of some kind for Christmas, £20 in cash for their birthday so they could save it or buy something from the sales. Baby gets same allowance of £20.
Mind you it can still mount up so this year I'm trying to do it even cheaper -half the cost if I can. I got a lovely necklace for grandaughter from charity shop the other week for £1 and think I'll add it to a basket or box of odds and sods, nail varnish etc. Grandson is harder to buy for...........he's into computers but last year I got him a memory stick for under a tenner and a musical mousepad for around tenner.
Baby is harder still in some respects. I've almost forgotten what to get for babies................lol His birthday is June and so far I've got a toy box -woolworths sale £5, blue teddy (quite a big one) 50p from charity shop and two of the old fashioned winnie the pooh pictures (£1 each)and a rag book (20p)that squeaks and another musical toy -all from charity shop.
It's not the cost that counts but I think they like something to unwrap - I know I always did.Mary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !
