Yeast storage

I've looked in the mega index collection and can't find the answer to my question, so here goes.

I can only really find yeast for my BM in sachets. As I only make medium loaves, I only use 1tsp of yeast at a time. I end up with half sachets that I put in the fridge and they manage to spill all over my shelves.

I was wondering if it is ok to empty all the sachets into an airtight jar and keep this in the fridge? It would make things far less messy and mean less waste.

  • I empty either the sachets or the big Doves Farm packet into a small lock'n'lock container and keep it on the cupboard shelf with no probs - as long as it's airtight it shouldn't need to be in the fridge.

Just cut the corner of the yeast packet and pour the yeast on to the spoon. Then fold the corner over and put it back in the box. Works for us.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Dried yeast is fine in an airtight container - I use a jam jar - on the pantry/cupboard shelf.
Fresh yeast is better refrigerated and will keep for a week or so.
Fresh yeast can be frozen, but will loose a little of it's potency after a few months.

when i buy the sachet of yeast , they always come 2 attached. so i cut them in half, and i have a plastic tupperwear pot which is the perfect width for and size for 8 sachets.

i then snip top use what i need and relace sachet back to pot and put lid on when done.

i have used this method for well over a year now and never had a problem.

I fold the top of the packet over and staple it shut, as for some reason I keep my stapler in the kitchen drawer anyway so it is handy. Works for me.
  • I use a small lock-n-lock and keep it in a cupboard. I buy the Doves Quick Yeast, 99p for 125g from Lakeland.

I fold over the top of my opened sachets a few times and then secure with an un-used clothes peg :D

    Hi,

I notice on the packets they say once opened use within 48 hours. Anyone find if this makes a difference if you leave it a few days or would you have to throw it out.

    Thanks in advance
