Public Sector Pay Offers

Does anybody here work in the public sector?

I am a nurse and OH is a teacher.

I've just read this in the news http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7188649.stm

OH will be offered a 2.4% pay increase, however as a nurse I will be offered a 1.9% pay increase as it is my social resposibility to keep inflation down!

Grhhh... it really bugs me.

OH has been qualified and teaching less time than I have been nursing, yet still earns more than me. To top it all off, I have to pay back student loans yet OH has his paid off for him.

But when the economy is booming, you'll get told that you won't get the rises others get because you've got more job security!

At least nurses get some public sympathy though?

Me and my OH both work in the public sector, keep looking for a way out, but still need to pay the mortgage. In my job you don't get any transferable qualifications/skills, so most of the other jobs I could apply for are also public sector.
  • All public sector jobs are political footballs.

Those in Private Sector do have the riskier jobs, however most of the Public Sector has some sort of 'privatisation' in the structure.

I just find it ironic that the police, who by Law can't strike get a 1.9% payrise yet the teachers who can (and do) strike get 2.4%.

What HM Gov't did to the nurses (1.9% ?) was disgusting.

There are few Public Sector 'safe' jobs anymore.

The best job seems to be as an MP. They vote for their own payrise. Employ partners as secretaries and claim thousands in expenses. When they lose their job they get thousands in pay offs and a pension.

    Oh for equality !

Jobs in the NHS aren't that safe. Where I work there has been restructuring and tendering out of services. As a result there are now about 15 "displaced" staff who will probably be made redundant.

DWP staff have just had a 3 year deal imposed.
All staff on the max of their grade will get 0% in years 2 & 3- they'll just get a non consolidated bonus instead- which of course does not count towards their pensions- a bit like 'cash in hand'.
As you've guessed, everyones happy with that!, and DWP management refuse to go to ACAS.

I'm sure the bonus will be taxed as well!
