Thanks Claire. I shall go to Leeds when I can gird my loins to hack through the traffic!
Keighly might be more appealing as it is much easier. It would be great to fond some good fabrics there.0 -

Just wanted to bump this up as I'm off to Rolls&Rems tomorrow in search of either green corduroy for a skirt, or some decent quality (ie not the tissue-thin stuff that so many high-street clothes consist of)cotton for a blouse.
Quite excited by the prospect, but going to see a friend this weekend so probably won't finish the blouse if I start with that. And I do like to complete a garment in one sitting...Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.0 -
Went to Rolls & Rems, and it is very good. Lots of choice and a bargain bin! Bought some skirt fabric, some blouse fabric and loads of lining material that was going for only £1.50 so thought I'd give it a home
Made my skirt. Thing is, I'm not so sure that I like it now. I like the shape, but I'm not that keen on the patterned fabric any more...Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.0 -

Hello Claire
Just a note to say that the fabric shop in Edgeware is near the junction of Station Road and Edgeware High Street(the main A5 to North London) on the tube station side. Have not been too well lately so sorry for delay am feeling better now and hoping to finish the beaded dress I am making for my son's partner - its dark green and white Japanese style print with stand collar which is beaded as is the front vent and hopefully slits at the side if I have enough beads.0 -
Enfield market used to have a fabric stall, haven't been there for years though. And there was a shop in Edmonton in the shopping centre I used a couple of times. This was in the days of only one daughter and pre primark/matalan/tesco value.
I recently made a couple of skirts, one each for my youngest DD's. Total cost £6.60 each but you know what? They fit at the waist and come down to just below the knee, they aren't see through, they're warm, they will fit for two years at least and I can let them down after that, they have washed up beautifully and iron flat and well, I enjoyed making them, they're unique, they're 'the same but different', I made hairbands with the remnant of trim to match, they'd have cost £10-15 each in JL or M&S.
Only wish I had a picture after all that!!
I'll be joining the prom dress brigade for the eldest DD shortly I imagine!0 -
Old Meanie, glad you're feeling better. The dress sounds amazing - any chance of a pic when its done? Thanks for the fabric shop hints OM and HelenKA, I might jump on a bus this weekend and investigate.
I had a day to myself in the house on Friday (waiting for a parcel that never arrived) so I've started a blouse. Had to stop when I got to the bits that needed interfacing as I've run out and I couldn't go out to get any
Ravenfire, wait till you get half way through a pattern and it tells you to baste something! The first time I read that I honestly thought I had to go and soak what I was making! Have you got a project going at the mo?Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.0 -
Lidl have got sewing machines in again for £39!!!
I persuaded my OH to buy me one for valentines day hehe!
Now I just have to learn to use it so will be watching this thread with interest.
Any recommendation for an inexpensive book for a complete novice?0
