well new grandchild has arrived safe and well and dd and her dh are coping and learning to be a family, so I am back to doing my own thing now. I got more fabric  so my stash is getting very large but I can`t resist a bargain. I cut and washed 2.25m yesterday and have started to make a folkwear cheesemakers smock for my dh but tbh I have my eye on it for myself. It is very very easy to make, basically just straight lines and finishing is easy too because the placket and shoulder yokes are finished as you go. I think I`ll be able to do the rest on the overlocker tomorrow
I have been tidying up some loose ends like sewing buttons on a dress and shortening the sleeves on a lightweight jacket
Has anyone tried butterick, modern fit patterns? I have had a browse but am disappointed to see that there is a size split whereas petite plus has all the sizes in one pattern and they are easy to alter. If you have tried the butterick ones, will you please if you like it or not0 -
Ladies,

i was very excited to find a copy of this book in a charity shop yesterday - I was umming and ahhing over buying it as it is heavy, I had other shopping, I'm 35wks pregnant and was planning on walking home but just then OH rang to say he was leaving work early so could pick me up - I practically skipped outta the shop with my new book.
Shame I still can't figure out how to thread my sewing machine!!!0 -
Did the download manual that Biggles found not work?
What about asking these people if one of their manuals would help you?

Home page says"For a quick response to any questions 0845 4309824"
(I have bought haberdashery from them and service has been very quick.)0 -

The download did work but it was for the service manual, rather than the instruction manual. I was optimistic about it containing the necessary info at first as it is about 300 odd pages long but after much trawling, I still couldn't see what I needed.
I've had another go tonight after poring over the RD book, I think I am closer but maybe the bobbin I've got (from my Mums Singer) doesn't fit properly which making is it all go wrong.
This is really one of those occasions I need my Mum but she lives 2 hrs away! She has shown me how to thread her Singer and I tried to apply the same thing to mine but the differences in machines have me stumped!
I think I'm going to end up spending £10 on a manual from Sewing Machines Sales - it's for a different model number but the picture looks the same on the front so I am hopeful....0 -
Morning all :hello:
Sewing has gone a bit out of the window in the last few days, the blouse I am making has a really fiddly collar fitting, so much for "fast & easy" quoted on the pattern.
So I gave up & went & painted my bedroom & assembled the new furniture I'd bought for it instead.:rotfl:
Savagelyric - I have two sewing machines (Jones VX810 & Toyota 21DES), I know they're not the machine's that you have got but I could scan (& PM you) the pages showing the threading of the machine & bobbin pages if that would help ? Might give you some idea where you're going wrong.
I was very pleased to find the Reader's Digest book aswell, once I get my confidence back & start to make more on a regular basis & I think it will be very useful.

Thank you muchly for the offer InkyCats - I would really appreciate any help!0 -
Savagelyric - I scanned them in but I don't think I can attach them on a PM, can you PM me your e-mail & I will send them to you.
I think you need some sort of linked photo store thing on this site in order to do that, bit technical for meDon't Take Life too Seriously - Nobody gets out alive :rotfl:0 -
morning all, can i join in please.
firstly i have never anything since leaving school, but would love to give it a go, as clothes are so expensive, especially as i am not the average size.
have ordered myself a brand new sewing machine that should be delivered on weds.
my question as i'm new to this is where is the best place to buy patterns and fabric?
thanks for reading
shazenjoy life, we only get one chance at it:)0 -
Hi Shazrobo,
I too hadn't really made anything on the clothing front for the last 20 years, although I had been making, curtains, cushion covers & roman blinds, all nice simple straight up & down stitching :rotfl:
If you read back through the thread there are loads & loads on links to all sorts of lovely online fabric stores, other people will probably be along some time during the day & will be able to let you know of fabric shops in your area.
There seem to be two popular pattern sites :-
www.sewingpatterns.com
Although delivery from this site has been a problem for some, I have personally never had any problems bought 4 patterns which worked out at £20, including p&p.
www.habithat.co.uk
This one I haven't tried yet.
