How long to keep documentation?

Hi everyone 
Just a quick question from me this morning! I'm having a tidy out at home and can't remember for the life of me how long I'm supposed to keep personal finance stuff for.
At the back of my head is 7 years, but someone else has said that only applies if I was self employed and that its 3 years
