i didn't ask for this card !

i recently received a letter stating that my MBNA card limit had been reduced to £1000 ( no sweat as i dont use it ) and then the other day i got in the post a new card (bmi) which i certainly did not ask or apply for.The limit on this was £15000, very strange, has this happened to anyone else ?

might want to contact them, as that is very strange... possible identity theft?

I'd suggest checking your credit report incase it has anything else on it.

Contact BMI and tell them that you didn't order the card. They should have a CCA for this, but if it was done online will not have a written signature - just an electronic one. If they ask for the card to be returned, make sure you cut it up and have cut the chip in 2.

This may be a fraud where someone has hoped to intercept the card so i'd get onto this asap. Also make sure your computer has a thorough virusscan incase it has picked up a keylogger.

  • Hmm, did you receive anything in the post saying they were going to replace/'upgrade' your card? I got a similar letter from Halifax once on a card I never used with them. They cancelled my old card, sent me a new one, and told me it had a long 0% balance transfer term on it.

It may be that they noticed you weren't using your old card, and from your profile they have with you thought that you might be more likely to use the bmi card. (Did you charge many travel-related expenses on your old card by any chance?)

Certainly I'd call them them up though, ask them exactly why it was sent - do their records show they received an application (how - phone, post, online?), or was it something they've done themselves? And if you don't need it, ask them to cancel it. Hope this helps...

This happened to me a couple of years back I had an abbey card and then one day out of the blue I got an MBNA card through the post, I chopped it up and sent it back, it wasn't an identity theft attempt as no search was made on my credit file. It was basically MBNA hoping I would take on more debt.
