Credit score - worth getting or not?

Hi.

Just wondering if it is worth paying for my credit score so that I can see what it is?

Also, I know 1000 is the best score, but where are the boundaries for excellent / good / fair etc ?

Thanks for your help.

  • Different financial institutions score differently fro each other, so a 'score' from a CRA doesn't really mean much. IMHO a waste of money.

Your credit report will give you a good indication of your credit worthiness, and chance of securing a line of credit. If you have missed payments/defaults/CCJ's then the less likely you are to get credit

I think you can get a free trial for the bigger ones, just remember to cancel before you are charged!
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
  • I think for me it's not worth it so i wont get one
But thats only because i know that my credit score is rubbish i dodnt need a piece of paper to confirm it :-)
I think alot of people find it handy though

Hi, I registered for the free trial before applying for anything else as I wanted to see how well or how quickly these things updated. I just downloaded the free report to check what was listed on it, then did an application for something new. I logged back into my free trial account about 3 days after submitting the application and the new details were showing up already. Assuming everything goes OK, then I won't bother paying for the extra info. Just thought it was worth letting you know how quickly these companies check your records, though :)

  • Hi, just thought i would let you know that i just checked my credit score with Experian and it was 993 out of 1000. It was under the good section so only 7 points below the top and not an excellent score. Must need to be 1000 for excellent lol. Despite this i am in serious debt trouble as i have already posted on here but as i have never missed a payment they still score me high. Hope that helps
  • I personally don't see the point in wasting a fiver on it! :undecided

OK so they tell your score is 750 or something. Then what? It does suddenly make you anymore credit worthy! And different lenders will score you differently anyway.

If you're gonna waste the fiver at least buy yourself a bottle of wine or on something you will enjoy. :)

The thing is surely they just use the information at hand and make a calculation, is this calculation not floating around somewhere? It would be handy if you could put your info into a spreadsheet from your credit file and it calculated your credit score.
