Mouldy car!

A while ago I had to have a window replaced in my car as some little oik broke in to it. When they replaced the window, they didn't seal it very well and it leaked. Of course, I didn't find out until I was in the car wash and the window people (big firm, who shall remain nameless) didn't come out until after it had rained solidly for about 3 days.

Having had such a soaking, the carpet, seat and seatbelt in the back are now growing mould

Can anyone recommend an OS way of killing what is growing and making my car smell less....fungal? I don't even want to look at the cleaning aisle in the supermarket as I'll just end up buying a load of stuff that is really expensive only to find out on here that a dab of vinegar or something equally simple would do the trick!
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

  • You could try stardrops diluted well in water and if possible when the weather is dry leave a window slightly open for some fresh air to freshen the car.

i had a buggy go like this on me after it had stayed in the shed (my boys had outgrown the buggy and i was passing it on) an hour scrubbing with a green scrubby thing stardrops and plenty of hot water sorted the problem (you will be left with some staining) but the problem will be eliminated

do you know anyone with a carpet cleaner that also has an upholstry attachment? that will make the job alot easier (my sofa is sparkling from the cleaning i gave it over the weekend)

Yup vax works well on it. Personally I'd be requesting that the people who fitted the window had it proffesionally valeted.

Mould and mildew removers, bleach etc will probably ruin the fabrics.

A little moisture trap in the car when you're not using the car might help, we always use them in cars we have stored for a while. Can get them in most £1 shops just make sure they don't get tipped over.
One day I might be more organised...........

  • We had the same problem in our campervan and was told the only thing you should use is Borax which is cheap & natural. You need to scrub everywhere including squirting a bit into the vent/air system as you need to kill all the spores. Hope this helps Rachelle

Thanks, I'll give the stardrops a go as I don't have any Borax. Ugh, the idea of a car full of spores makes my skin crawl. Not least as I have a l-o-n-g drive at the weekend.
