What are you thinking of spending? We spent £350 on a double mattress (reduced from £500) I think it is pocket sprung, it is quite firm, but with a lot of padding above the springs. It is the heaviest mattress ever and has lasted over five years. My GF is actually annoyed at its longevity as she wants tempur mattress, but cant justify replacing the current one!
Go to a good store (I like furniture village) and really try the different types. I like a hard mattress but it is personal preference and to some extent depends on you body shape (typically skinny people are more comfortable on a hard mattress and larger people on a softer one, it fits the body shape better!)
Talk to the salesman about the base needed - I had to adjust and add more slats for the smaller springs in our mattress. Otherwise the mattress would not have been properly supported by the bed. Also, hoover and turn the mattress and use a good mattress protector and blanket under the sheet to keep the mattress in good condition0 -
Thnx lipidicman , i was looking to spend around £400 max on the matress & i do suffer from a bad back , so i think i probably will go to a matress wholesaler like furniture village you mentioned.
i have found this article:
Guidelines for Choosing a Mattress
So what should you look for in a mattress? The Cornell University's Ergonomics group gives some guidelines for choosing your mattress.[9]
Look for a mattress that is:
> Designed to conform to the spine's natural curves and to keep the spine in alignment
when you lay down.
> Designed to distribute pressure evenly across the body to help circulation, decrease body movement and enhance sleep quality.
> Designed to minimize the transfer of movement from one sleeping partner to the other.
> Designed with perimeter edge support.0 -
You should be OK with £400 to spend......much cheaper than this is usually false economy. The tips above are a bit scientific and not really practical. £400 is going to get you the starter pocket sprung design and it should be pretty good. If you have special requirements, you may have to spend a little more. Anyway - go try some beds!0

Tempur is the original Memory foam (there are other threads - do a search). We are thinking about getting one, but not everyone likes them. £400 won't cover it (think £1500) but they are meant to be good for back problems.0
