</td> </tr> </tbody></table> </form> <!-- Main text --> The M-Audio brand is one of the biggest in the home studio market. Their products range from earphones to nearfield monitors, and from desktop wireless MIDI controllers to full-size stage pianos. They manufacture audio interfaces of many sizes: from the two-input, two-output Transit to the 34-input, 36-output Profire Lightbridge Firewire-to-ADAT converter, and have a selection of studio and guitar processors, mics and DJ gear on offer.
The company started life in 1988 as Midiman, creating MIDI and audio interfaces for some of the first home studio computers. As their reputation grew, so did the home studio market, and the brand was soon synonymous with stable, reliable gear at honest prices. The M-Audio name was introduced in the late '90s, and by the turn of the century, the familiar logo was branded on the company's wide variety of products.
M-Audio have gone from strength to strength in recent years, after their acquisition by the Avid group in 2004. Since then, as a business unit of Digidesign, the diversity of the M-Audio range has increased, particularly with the development of Pro Tools M-Powered, a version of the industry-standard DAW software specially designed to work on M-Audio interfaces.
This month, thanks to our friends at M-Audio, we've got a fantastic bundle of studio gear to give away, with a total prize value of almost $6000. The centrepiece of the studio rig is a Project Mix I/O, M-Audio's flagship audio interface and control surface, which will give the lucky winner hands-on control of Pro Tools M-Powered (also included in the prize). The interface is capable of connecting 18 simultaneous inputs and 14 simultaneous outputs to and from Pro Tools M-Powered, or any Core Audio-, GSIF- or ASIO-compatible DAW system.
Eight of the Project Mix's inputs have mic preamps, with further I/O in ADAT and S/PDIF formats. To make the most of these digital connections, a multi-channel analogue-to-digital (A-D) converter is required, so M-Audio have included one of their Octane rackmount units with the studio bundle. The Octane is an eight-channel preamp and A-D converter, which enables you to connect another eight mics, instruments or line-level sources to the Project Mix I/O (or any ADAT-equipped device), giving the lucky winner of this prize a 16-input Pro Tools M-Powered rig.
Monitoring for the bundle is handled by a pair of the respected EX66 active nearfields (reviewed in SOS September 2006, and on-line here), which usually cost $1400. Each EX66 employs an MTM (Mid-Tweeter-Mid) driver arrangement, which comprises a pair of bass/mid-range drivers straddling a single tweeter. M-Audio say this increases the size of the 'sweet spot', making the monitors useful even in large control rooms. They have analogue and digital inputs, as well as a range of controls for tailoring the monitors' frequency response to the room in which they are situated.
For those late-night sessions, and for checking your mixes, there's a pair of the new Studiophile Q40 closed-back headphones, worth $180. The Q40s are perfect for monitoring in situations where you want to minimise spill reaching the mics from the headphones, and vice versa.
The rest of the bundle comprises an enviable collection of M-Audio microphones: the Sputnik, M-Audio's large-diaphragm tube microphone; a matched pair of Pulsar II small-diaphragm condensers; plus Luna and Solaris large-diaphragm condensers — more than enough to get you started in style with multitrack recording.
If you would like to be in with a chance of winning this fabulous studio bundle, simply fill out the entry form at the bottom of this page and post it to the address on the coupon, or enter electronically via the Sound On Sound web site. Please make sure you answer all the questions and complete the tie-breaker. We also require your full address, including postcode, and your daytime telephone number, so we can let you know if you've won. (This info is automatically appended to the online submission form from the info stored in your MY ACCOUNT preferences.) The closing date for competition entries is January 31st, 2008.
