4 weeks free pet insurance

Came out of my local pets at home shop and as I was leaving there was a little stand with fliers from pet plan in a little plastic folder. In it is a voucher for 4 weeks free pet insurance. Usefull if you are a skint flint or if your !!!!! has dropped, or will be dropping a litter, and you can give it to people coming to pick up a new pup. Always good as a sales tool.

I have had this in the past

you have to sign up for the whole year first....and then you get the first month free

but you cant make any claims on the insurance until after the free month

mind you....if you sign up online, you get 2 months free....;)

If you have a puppy then go to your local vet they will be able to give you 6 weeks free insurance from Petplan, applicable immediately (so sign the form BEFORE the start of the appontment in case the vat finds anything) and there is no obligation to continue after the 6 weeks expire, although petplan will send you a quote by post. The only obligation is that your puppy is less than 1 year old for the whole 6 weeks & that your puppy hasn't already been treated for anything (or that condition is automatically excluded). You can only continue beyond the 6 weeks if you have your puppy vaccinated. I know this is accurate as I work for a vet & process insurance claims.

  • Lillibet - you can't sign the form before the appointment as a precaution that the vet might find something. The whole point of the immediate cover is that it requires confirmation from the vet that the animal is in good health. So what you suggest means that the vet is colluding in fraud - not a good idea seeing as the FSA or Petplan could then stop the vet issuing cover notes which would be a bad thing for all pet owners.

pennylane99 - sorry, hatecoorporateuk is right, the offer in the pet shop is 4 weeks free cover and it is not the first month of an annual policy that you sign up for. And yes you CAN claim during the 4 weeks free period. Injury cover starts immediately and illness cover after 14 days (the reason for this is that the animal has not had a health check from a vet which goes back to Lillibet's post)

    chuckley - so cynical....

hatecoorporateuk - if you are a breeder, Petplan has a special scheme. If not then by all means give the new owner the 4 weeks free voucher but it doesn't work unless the new owner phones to activate cover (so it's not you giving the insurance with the puppy or kitten) and again illness cover doesn't start for 14 days as explained above

I know all these things because my owners shopped around carefully before getting insurance for me
  • DON'T USE PETPLAN sorry for shouting but don't use them ,i had a dog insured with them and at * 1/2 was unfortunate enougth to break a leg ,they refused to pay out stating they don't cover dogs over 8 yr's old even tho they kept taking direct debit .
personally i find tesco's to be one of the cheapest and the best

    thanks anyway
