in Cutting tax
hi,
i have a house in the UK which i have rented out for the last 4 years through a property management company, i have since gotten rid of the PM company and my parents are looking after the property.
I live in new Zealand and i am a full time resident hence i do not pay any tax in the UK.
I paid approx 500 pounds over the 4 year period in VAT, my question is can i claim this back?
Im not really update with tax rules etc.
The rent i collect is 400 pounds a month, i dont pay any tax on this as im sure i dont have to, not being a permanent resident of the UK.
Any advice would be appreciated

The agents (your parents) have to withhold UK tax at the basic rate before they pay you the rent. You can avoid this by filing a form NRL1.
You will probably not owe UK tax given the figures you mention because the income will be covered by your personal allowance (assuming you are a UK or Commonwealth citizen).
The VAT is not recoverable because the property is sited in the UK.
Is their NZ tax on the rental income?0 -
thanks for that, i am a Uk citizen, my parents have already filled in the NRL1 so thats covered.
I dont pay tax on the rental income here in NZ, didnt know i had to. All the rental money stays in the UK anyway, not sure if that makes a difference, the rental money is paying off the mortgage.
I just wasnt sure wether i could claim the VAT back, but youve answered my question. thanks again
