Paying Tax on private health re-imbursements?

Do you have to pay tax on private health re-imbursements?
It appears that tha taxman wants us to pay tax on the health benefit and then have to pay tax on the reimbursement from the health company. What do I have to say/show in order for them to remove this from a tax request?

You should only pay tax on the amount of the policy paid by your employer - why have you been charged more. Have you filled out a Self Assessment form and entered a higher figure for medical benefit than the figure shown of your form P11D (statement of company benefits) If this is the case you can provide the correct figures and your Self Assessment Calculation will be amended. If this is not the case please explain further and we will see if we can help
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)
  • I have used my P11D in order to determine the value but the figure (I checked with our US payroll division) has been input based upon the figures they have which are all fees reimbursed by health company. They had also done the same on expenses but the tax office waited until I queried it and then cancelled over £5000 in expenses. Shoulw I simply get a confirmation of the benefit that the company pay or do they have to provide a new P11D?

If you fill in an SA return you can find out the amount the company pays for the policy and ask for a revision - if you do not fill in a SA return you would have to obtain a revised P11D.To be honest it is best to get a new P11D anyway as when your tax return is looked at the entries you make will be (should be) checked against your P11D figures submitted to I.R. and if there is a discrepancy they will assk you further questions anyway. Do you work in UK for US company or US for UK company??? As your P11D was already wrong re expenses it could be the employer need a hand with completing the P11D forms correctly.Your expenses were probably entered in full without deducting the expenses that were not taxable.

  • It sounds like your employer has used the US rather than UK rules for calculating benefits? Anything else on your P11D that may be wrong?

If the P11D is too high this means that the UK employer is probably paying too much Class 1A NICs as well. Employer could probably benefit from some P11D training.
