Want to get NI number - proof of actively looking for jobs?

Hi,
As an international student who will be studying here for at least 6 yrs, I am thinking of getting a National Insurance number as it seems that so many forms require me to fill in a NI number (like R85).
I have not done any 'official' work since living here - the only jobs I've done are like helping my seniors type their projects for a small sum etc. (which is really not much and perhaps only once a year or so).
I do have rights to work here, and can definitely prove my identity in terms of a passport, bank and credit card statements etc.
I wonder will I have any trouble in applying for a NI number?
Thanks a lot.

Do you have a work permit? Depending on what country you are from you may need a work permit. Working without one and getting caught will lead to deportation. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

Hi Hapless, I'm sure that I'm allowed to work for 20 hours term-time and full time during vacations (part of the Student Visa).
About my issue of NI, what do you think?
Thanks.0 -
Can't you ask at the college you attend? They should be able to give you this sort of information. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

Thanks.
Yes I've been to the Department of Works & Pensions website. I just wonder what do they mean by 'actively looking for work'. Will things like e-mails that I sent out in reply to job advertisements be helpful, or do I need something else?0
