Credit card/Banking problem

Looking for some advice.
I received a phone call from my credit card company a couple of days ago. It transpires that someone attempted to place a bet in a bookmakers for several thousand pounds using my credit card. Fortunately the transaction was not allowed, I have have lost no money and the cc company are issuing a new card.
My credit card statement arrived the same day and I noticed that a payment I had made a couple of weeks previously was not shown on the statement. I contacted the credit card company( which is the same as my bank) and they checked my account and could find no reference to a payment. They asked if I could drop into the branch where I had made the payment and show my receipt as there may have been a wrong digit or some other error which was causing the problem.
I went into my bank this morning with the receipt and there is no record of any transaction on their files. The manageress of the branch said that it was
probable that my money would paid to my credit card account by next week but she would have to fax all the details off to head office. She asked to keep the receipt but I refused and she photocopied it.
Has anyone else ever been in this situation and what was the outcome?
Should I be doing anything else to cover myself ie: inform the police, or is that overreacting?

You would have got a better reponse on the Credit Card forum for this?
However - I wouldn't take any further action at this point. The attempted fraud and the missing payment can't possibly be linked in any way. You don't say how you made the payment (cash / cheque etc) .... but you've got a receipt so that's pretty good proof.
Possible it's just sitting in one of their suspense accounts for some reason (wrong reference keyed ..etc) - so they will find it.
Give them a few days?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Thanks Mike. I am relieved to hear that there will be no link between cc fraud and bank deposit, cash btw.
I will take your advice and leave it for a few days before checking to see if the money has turned up.:beer:0
