Face Painting & 6th birthday parties...

I'm thinking about hiring a face painter for my dd's 6th birthday party in February.
Does anyone have any recommendations for someone in the Leeds area, also a rough idea of how much they charge per hour etc.
I'm wondering if I'm possibly going a bit OTT!!! As its a group of six year olds can I get away with buying a face painting kit and just doing it myself?? i've done some face painting in the past and with a bit of practice I should be able to do some basic faces plus I might do nail painting and fake tattoos etc!! How sophisticated are kids now a days? What do they expect at a home party?
We've just moved from quite a poor area where none of the kids in my daughter's class ever had parties to a much better off area where the kids seem to expect wacky warehouse type parties! I don't want to over do it but I also don't want her party to be the worst they've been to!
Oh heck, I've joined the "keep up with the jone's" brigade!!:o
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Sainsburys are selling xmas gift tin sets for face painting only £2.50. Perhaps a cheaper option is get the kids to 'paint' each other ? That way they would not be disapointed if you were not a brilliant artist. I know I couldn't do it - not very artistic!0

Hi Anna
well I'm a professional Face Painter and if you're looking for a professional who works to exceptional standards you should probably start your search here: http://www.facepaint.co.uk/members.asp they are all members of the Face Painting Assiciation and carry public liability insurance.
At the risk of being shot down by other face painters
(please don't hate me !) you could always buy a small Snazaroo pallete SNAZAROO Rainbow Face Paint Kit - perfect for party on eBay, also, Unisex Fancy Dress, Fancy Dress, Clothes, Shoes Accessorie... which will do up to 50 faces. Stay away from the grease stick face paints, these are very limited with what you can achieve with regard to designs.
Couple of points to note if you're doing it yourself. you'll need to invest in some sponges as I advise 1 per child (you could cut up a baby sponge), and some brushes fore line work. Get a kit ASAP if you're going to do it yourself, and practice practice practice! You could get a book from the library with some ideas, as the leaflet you get with the kit is very limited.
Also please be aware that if you did hire a professional they would have public liability insurance and work to exceptional standards and you get what you pay for!
Or, if you were to go down the "make up" route, you could have a "Little Miss Makeover" party; invest in some small tattoos of butterflies, fairies etc, and have a nail painting session, with maybe hair braiding, and a splash of eyeshadow!
Hope you have a fab time whatever you choose and if you need any advice please feel free to PM me

Lou,
Thanks very much for that! Some brilliant ideas there!
Just out of interest, do you know roughly what the average is per hour?
~I've done my daughter;s face before so I can just about knock out a butterfly etc! The suggestion to practice practice practice will definitely be followed!!
Thanks again

I have to say that I think they will love the fact that it's a home party; it's good for children to host in their own homes as they share nicely and learn to look after guests.
They will be really excited.
DS1 had a party at home for his 5th and was the only person in the whole class to do so, which I think is a real pity ... he will never forget the day he had a bouncy castle in his back garden! That's Numberwang!0 -

If you are going to do it yourself, give them a limited choice of what they can have done. EG butterfly, fairy or princess. Otherwise they'll be asking for stuff you've never heard of.
I did a face painting course last year at work and it was great fun. I've managed to get out of actually painting a childs face so far.0 -
Can I just second the recommendation for the Snazeroo paints. I used to work in a playscheme and had these paints and a snazeroo instruction book. I used those little make up sponges and a couple of fine paintbrushes. I was really surprised to see what I could achieve. The paint went on really easily and the book gave you step by step instructions which really helped as it meant the designs had proper shading and depth.0

Just another recomendation of the Snazaroo face paints, my oldest son (10) got a set many moons ago as a birthday present and I thought at the time, what a weird and useless present. I take it all back it has been dragged out almost every halloween and has turned out to be a godsend, we have a ELC set and although good, if I have to I will buy a Snazaroo one again. I noticed that Hobbycraft sell the Snazaroo sets, not cheap but worth it.

I survived the M8 snowjam 6/12/10 - 17 hrs to get home :snow_grin

Yep, I love Snazaroo too, we've had ours for years, probably full of germs lol
They're great for that random rainy day you need to fill, and it comes off really easily with some baby lotion."The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too."- Samuel Butler0 -
Anna,
did you decide to book a face painter then or do it yourself? My offer still stands of doing a few "step by steps" for you if that'll help!
Hope you have a fabby time
