totally "un-techie" so please be gentle !!
main thing is .....i love music and spend lots of time listening to cd's on a sony micro hi-fi system which is getting worn out .
i've just started managing to use my pc to sometimes copy a cd so i can have extra copy in my car.
Went to a couple of stores this morning to look at a new ?? £100 to £150??
"decent" micro hi-fi system ... wasn't that many ..
seemed to be more about "things to dock ipods" ... and philips wireless systems that did that and more .. which sounded a good idea !.
i was also thinking it would be good to be able to have it playing in kitchen and upstairs in bedroom sometimes ( live on my own) .....
sooo.... makes me think.. should i be learning about "ipods" ??.. is this what i should be doing instead of having and copying cd's ... ( particularly when i'd like to just have the tracks i like ) .....
and having everything on an ipod .. instead of loads of discs ?? ... also.. don't know a thing about "downloading" ....
don't know first thing about how easy / hard it is to get all my cd's onto an ipod in first instance ?? ....
HELP !!
Wonder if there Is websites that do a really simple "idiots guide" to all this ..
thanks ,

I have everything on my iPod. It's really simple to do. You install iTunes on the PC, use that to "rip" the CDs to your PC and then attach the iPod to the PC and it uploads it all.0

have a look here http://www.apple.com/itunes/
there are other alternatives but the ipod is the most accessorized mp3 player on the market. you can get an ipod and a couple of docking stations (one for up and one for downstairs). basically, you install itunes, stick your cd's in the computer and let itunes 'rip' them, plug your ipod into the computer and transfer the tracks, really simple. you can also buy almost any song on itunes so you don't have to buy cd's again.
personally, i have a sony ericsson walkman phone that is almost the same and i have a portable docking station so i can have music anywhere.0 -
stan747 brilliant . thanks .. great straightforward advice .
what a revelation !!... there's hope for me yet !...
and for anyone in similar situation to me .. go for it .. will improve my music listening dramatically .
so far .....
looked at apple website and got basic drift
downloaded i-tunes ... have imported first dozen discs .. what a doddle !! ..
learnt how to delete those tracks i don't want .
learnt how to play in "shuffle format" .. utopia of course .
Being able just to play through this pc speakers' is great ...having non stop music is brill
ordered an 80g ipod classic
ordered a bose dock system !! decided to go for something really good ( hope it is !!)
ordered a griffin i-trip .. so i can play in car .
learnt how to "get track names" added.
got the drift of i-tunes store .. being able to instantly get new music ... eg .. i'd heard a brilliant record on radio .. rihanna .. normally would buy cd , discover i only liked a few tracks etc etc ...
couple of clicks found it on i-tunes .. facility to hear 30 seconds of every track ... quickly discovered i only liked couple of tracks .. so could have just bought them at 79p each .
Brilliant facility ...but will only lead to rapid death of death of cd's and music retailers .
Presume i was a bit naughty then .. remembered reading about "limewire" .. had a look at that .. and actually downloaded one track which worked a breeze.
Recall previous publicity about this not being moral or legal .. will have to get up to date on that ..
Presume i've mastered the basics of music on ipod .. (hopefully being able to download to and play music when ipod arrives ...and master i-trip ).
Anything else i should know or be aware of ??

You might want to try out the Griffin iTrip and keep the receipt sometimes the reception on the car radio can be poor, the Kensington Universal FM Transmitter (available from Amazon etc) is much better in tests, and my opinion.
Another great site for accessories is: iPodWorld
If you have an Aux In, on your car stereo, then you can do away with a transmitter and just plug in your iPod via a short lead from headphone socket to the car's Aux In socket.
You can also download cover artwork for tracks and albums you add to your library (see the tools menu) so you can switch iTunes into CoverFlow mode and browse albums, like you would real CDs by cover, this artwork also gets sent to your iPod.
In the next six months, tracks on iTunes will becoming cheaper shortly too, only by about 6p, but every little helps so they say!
It might be worth getting a nice case for your iPod Classic too.

We've ditched our iTrip and found the AUX in on the car.. ordered a cheap 3.5mm audio cable online and Roberts your mothers brother. Much more convenient and better quality.0

It's also the way to get virusus and other undesirable things on your PC, but as the rules of the board prevent discussing P2P we'll say no more...;)

The earphones that come with the iPod can be bettered, something from the Sennheiser range like the MX550 perhaps.
Have look at the podcasts on the iTunes sites, loads of BBC radio programmes for free if you missed them on the radio.0 -
progress.... but one problem !
transferred all my cd tracks i like onto i-tunes and ipod
i-trip received and working in a minute
bose soundock received ... excellent product.
so all this has revolutionised my music listening !!... thanks to everyone that gave me guidance .
only problem i've got .. just started happening ..when i import a cd onto
i-tunes .... it goes through the tracks ... but when it comes to the last one it immediately starts again downloading from the first one ... how do i stop that ??0
