Credit file hiccup

I've just checked my credit file and it's pretty much spot on apart from a rash of applications made in October just gone.
Basically I moved into a new house with my partner and got credit checked when changing gas/leccy suppliers.
Then we had an emergency house situation so I made some credit applications or a 0 per cent purchase card - stupidly continuing to do so when I was turned down.
I made three applications in total and was accepted for one.
How long do these checks remain on your file for?
I currently have a zero per cent purchases card and a zero per cent balance card, where the rate is about to end, so hoped to make more card applications from April.

As far as I know, searches drop off your file after six months.
Hopefully someone will confirm that soon...I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.
