Council Tax - Reclaim % if don't live in area for full 12 months?

Think last council tax payment is taken this month, and then there is 2 months gap until the new year starts again in April. We are moving house at the end of February, and hence will only spend 11 months in the county, before moving to another county to which no doubt we will start paying council tax straight away. Just therefore wondering if its possible to reclaim 1 months worth?

Will retain ownership of the property that you leave ? and if so will it be furnished ? The answers to this will decide on the amount which you can get refunded but in most cases you can get the excess Council Tax you paid back.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

No, our existing house is being part exchanged for a new house. Once I have moved would you recommend contacting the council and see what they say?
  • Yes, you can claim a pro-rata refund for any period you don't live there. You don't have to go begging - just ask for it back.

Once you move in to your new property you will we entitled to clam back any excess council tax paid on the property you have vacated.

Inform them of the date you left and the Council Tax will be re-calculated up to the end on the last full day before you leave the property and any excess paid will be refunded to you.
