Is it restricted to Region 2, or is it multi-region (with a tweak)?

It will be set to the region of your Xbox. So for a UK Xbox, that's Region 2.

Multiregion is only possible if your machine is soft/hardware modded.

I've got one of these, it's really good and controls the music part of the Xbox aswell as the DVD part.

Regarding the region lock - the Xbox locks to the DVD region of whatever the first playback kit you put in is set too. For example, if the playback kit is region 2 and the first playback kit you put in it is region 2, then the Xbox will only ever be allowed to play region 2 DVDs. Unless of course the DVD you are trying to play is region free.

I have one of these too but only because I got it for a fiver in a one-off deal ages ago using a voucher.

It's extortionate of Microsoft to make a product that plays DVDs only when you spend extra money to buy what is basically a 'play/stop' button that they should supply with it in the first place.

From what I understand, its for tax/import reasons - by making it incapable of playing DVDs out of the box it is classed purely as a game machine rather than DVD player.

I think you can get unofficial playback kits off ebay which play both region 1 and 2 for about the same price. Not sure how well these work though.
