I used to use 118118 but they have now withdrawn the facility to send free text messeges through them.

If you register with the O2 website, you can send free texts from there. Alternatively, you can also try www.cardboardfish.co.ukI have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0

If you're registered on 02, then click on My O2 and you will see My message pad, click on the option send txt.
