This is run by the University of Oxford http://www.chem.ox.ac.uk/ and click on Volunteer Your PC, this has a bit more info. I've had it for a few years now and has given me no problems at all.0

No other takers? If you have a look at the Oxford University site that madscientist kindly linked to, it mentions that they are currently working on pancreatic cancer. This is one of the worst ones - usually you don't even feel ill until it's too late. My mum died of this fairly recently - went to the docs with a bad stomach and 6 weeks later she was dead. It must be worth a little bit of your computers idle time to help?
You don't need to join a team, you don't need to give money, you're not put on a "mailing list" and the software is purely there to "number crunch" - it doesn't cause any harm and doesn't incorporate any nasties.
Please help.
