I am a freelance book keeper based from the house. 2 of my clients I go to their premises every couple of days.
I'm trying to think of as many exps to reduce my tax bill.
I've got - mileage, phone, stationery, laptop, a couple of trips down South etc. But can I claim my lunches as subsistence when I go into the offices?
Or anything else you can think of?

Have you done your internet access? A proportion of you heating and lighting bills to cover the room you use as your office?
Lunches are not legit expenses unless you have to eat out the for entire day i.e breakfast and dinner as you are away from home for so long.
Go and download the booklet 480 from HMRC www.hmrc.gov.uk/guidance/480.pdfI'm not cynical I'm realistic

The booklet 480 is all about employees. You are self-employed. Whilst the rules are very similar, there are differences. The 480 is really of no use to you. I am afraid the answer is the same, that you probably cannot claim anything. Look at this link http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/BIM37670.htm

Don't forget you get £2 a week in any case. The following (updated by HMRC in January 2007) may also assist: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/BIM47815.htm0
