I hope that at some stage there will be a blind taste testing to see what the difference is taste-wise.
Rick Stein did this with 3 different types of chicken & most people tasted the difference - free range being favourite. (Was a year or so on bbc, he did different meat each week)0 -

I saw that, Rick Stein was one of the people that chose the cheapo supermarket one!0 -
Wow powerfull, never watched last nights but what i have seen tonight well i was almost in tears at 2 points and had to look away at others
im many things, annoyed shocked disgusted, i told myself im going to sleep on it but there is nothing to sleep on, im not buying 'standard' chicken again, i cannot after seeing that, its awful, i will find the extra cost from my budget elsewhere maybe from the fact another 1 of my boys is no longer in nappies, not sure how im going to bring myself to eat the standard chicken or chicken products in my freezer (wastefull but i really cannot nor want to at the moment) as already said as well when i buy chicken now it will be free range and it will be stretched where not a bit of it is wasted (and tesco well they can shove any of there chicken where it just doesnt shine)
cannot do it anymore, my budget maybe small but im sure i can push myself to buy a chicken thats had a life if im going to eat itDFW nerd club number 039'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' :money: i will be debt free aug 2010

P.S regarding mulesing, I found this on the vegan society site
"To counter flystrike a procedure called mulesing (illegal in Britain) is carried out on most of the lambs and sheep"
Its on this page if anyone wants to read it in context http://www.vegansociety.com/html/animals/exploitation/sheep.php

In Hugh's programme, Hayley appeared to be one of these people who are just blinkered, I got the feeling she would not have taken the free range chicken even if it was free! she seemed awkward for awkwards sake, but then there's always one;)0

I hate the way animals are brought up... I activly dont do anything about it though & do feel guilty.
What I wonder is how many people will still be buying free range in 6 months or a year?0 -
We've just watched this tonight, saw it Monday, missed last night. I have vowed never to pay full price for a battery chicken again, but did say that if I saw it reduced to clear, surely they wouldn't mind me buying it then, their answer was a definite NO. My children have asked me to ask their papa, could he please bring them a free range chicken instead of their chocolate biscuits that he usually brings them every every week. I'll try that tomorrow, but he'll probably bring a chicken AND the chocolate biscuits, I just can't get through to him that he brings too much chocolate.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0

People eat meat, if they didn't then these animals would have no purpose and wouldn't be breed. When we buy meat we don't think about what happens to the animal first, we don't have a concience when buying it. I have tears in my eyes when i see any animal slaughtered, but i still buy the meat. Animals in the wild kill to eat, they don't do it for fun.0

I knew alot of this before, and have always bought free-range eggs, but I've resolved never to buy non free-range chicken again after seeing Hugh's program. My motto regarding eggs has always been 'if I can't afford/can't get free-range eggs, then I wont have them at all', and I'll be applying the same thing to the chicken I eat. It's no different after all! If I find that I can't afford to buy free-range one week, I'll go without.
After reading some of the comments of people on this thread, with small budgets who will make it work somehow so they never have to buy standard chickens again, Hayley's excuse that she couldn't afford free-range seems a little pathetic. It is more expensive, and it is hard for people who don't have alot to spend on food, but it can be done. She made me so mad! I'd like to lock her up in a shed with no daylight and say 'well, you've got food, you've got water, what's your problem?' GRRRRRR!!!!0 -
I must admit that I chuckled at JoJoB's comment about Hayley possibly cutting out the biscuits!! I had muttered that whilst getting annoyed at the TV!
It did make me think seeing all those chickens - it was horrible. DH was being annoying "a £1 more is a £1 more etc" but I do all the shopping so tough!
It does confirm what I've been thinking for a while tho, I'd rather cut out the cheap packet of biscuits or the bar of choc I sneak in the trolley and buy some decent meat. I really hope it makes people think about what they buy..... Its worrying how little people know about their food though, they think that all food is "from the supermarket".0
