hi but they have paid the vat and are trying to get it back off me on the customs website it basically says its between me and them.
but thet have spelt my surname wrong on the invoice and letters have i not to send them letters back and say no one under that name lives here

Haven't got time to check this out at the moment - but I always believed that you should only be paying VAT on the portion of the carriage that occurs in the UK.
You are not importing carriage costs from the country of origin to the UK border and so they are null and void for VAT purposes. DHL are supposed to split up the total shipping cost into outside UK costs and inside UK costs and bill accordingly.
However it's a lot easier/lucrative for DHL to do it this way.All the World is a Stage; and I'm going through a difficult one at the moment!0 -
out of interest...as DHL are supposed to have paid the VAT & Duty on the recipients behalf, then claim it back off the recipient...wouldnt it therefore be acceptable to insist on a proof of payment from DHL first before you pay it back?? Or a proof that customs are requesting the amount that DHL are claiming back off the recipient??
Naturally if DHL are paying up front first they will add an administration charge or something, but I would thought a person was within their rights to ask for this info of DHL rather than just paying it without question??!! :cool:0 -

I receive goods from outside the EU as part of my business.
Yes you pay VAT on the shipping (it is a service) and on the whole cost of the shipping. That it starts outside the EU is the important bit, it is coming from a non-VAT area to a VAT area, hence the tax is imposed by customs. Where the shipping cost is not shown, it is estimated, often higher than the actual charges would be.
But it is only liable for customs charges if the value of the goods are £18 or more. Then all the charges get applied; VAT, possible import duties and then a charge for charging you the other charges.
Hope that helps.0
