We made a point of only using the thin hm cards for posting. all the fat ones were hand delivered and I got an £11.30 excess card from the po yesterday. Something from the states that cost $41.20. I made an expensive mistake as I believed it was ok under $45 and it must be $40

I think it is a ridiculous charge. It's not as if the thickness allowed is reasonable - if you want to put a letter in with a Christmas or birthday card and it is on A4 paper so has to be folded into four, that alone can make it too fat for the ordinary postage rate.

I think the PO must be desperate to recoup their losses now that so many people and businesses use email instead of snail mail. They will only drive more of us to do so by these tactics though :(.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

There should be a system whereby if you take it to a Post Office, and it goes through the slot it is then marked as "measured" so no further charges can be applied.

    Grrrrrrrrr!

This is exactly what I said to my husband the other day. If a post office worker tells you what the postage is then it isn't the customer's fault if it turns out the amount is wrong. It should have a post office sticker on it instead of a normal stamp to show the sorting office that it isn't the customer at fault. The branch of the post office that is at fault should then receive an advice note telling them of the mistake.
