Light wiring

Hello,

I really need some help. i stupidly took down a light fitting without looking how it should be replace.

I have 2 light fittings in my lounge and 1 switch. 1 light fitting is up fine but the other I tried to replace with a newer fitting the same and thats where i came a cropper.

I can get both lights to come on separately or together but can use the switch to work either.

I have 3 wires coming out of the ceiling. Each has a green/yellow wire and a black wire. I have 5 red wires.

The light fitting has a block with 2 rows of 4 holes to put the wires in.

Could you please advise me how to connect the wire.

Please not though that on lighting circuits black doesn't always mean neutral!
I suggest you get an electrician
  • Thank you for the link,

It doesnt seem to have a 2 light 1 switch room. Have you got any more suggestions?

Do both ceiling roses have more than 1x twin and earth cable? as there are many ways two lights on one switch can be wired.
  • One only has one cable with everything you need. the other has loads of cables.

I do not have a junction box.

The diagram espresso sent me looks very simialr but there arent enough red wires.

If you can't work it out from that diagram, you should get someone in who can.

There is no 1 answer as it will depend how it was wired in the first place! You will need an electrician who can sort out what needs to be connected to what! This is why electricians need their training - not to wire a house but to be able to sort out someone else's wiring! My OH (who is a sparky) constantly comes across this sort of problem. Good luck.

    that explains it then.
Your other light (with one twin and earth) is spured off the original lighting fitting this would have been connected to the neutral and switch terminal shown here.
  • In that case do I consider the previous light cable to be the source cable as I dont have a junction box?

how do i know which cable is from the switch/other light/ source?
