From memory the panasonic one I have uses 500W. So having it on for 2hrs would be one unit of electricity (2 x 500 = 1kW) which for me in Northern Ireland works out at 11.11pence for electricity. So basically for the Panasonic SD254 it uses half a unit of electricity every 1 hour it is on. Hope this helps ?

Not quite correct, the 500w is maximum, for heating element which is only on whilst baking, 1 hour approx

Mixing & resting would use considerabley less than 500w

There would be a low use for warming dough

So not 10p per hour [my unit cost], 10p for 1 hour only, the other time is much less

Farway, yeah didnt really think it through fully when calculating that, although to be honest I am just starting out using it and only use the bake cycle at the minute and mix by hand, so I can almost work out my usage (just under half a unit) as I bake for 55 mins so the element should be on for the full 55 mins.
  • Why not keep an eye on your local freecycle group for a breadmaker? I've just been nosing around the two groups most local to me and there were one (or maybe two?) breadmakers being offered.

I bought a Panasonic when they were cheap before Christmas and have used it loads of times. Only made bread so far (haven't tried pizza bases or dough yet) and been really pleased with the results, although some have been better than others. I have found Sainsburys own strong bread flour to give the best results so far and this is quite cheap. This is the first week that I haven't bought a loaf, have managed to make one most days. Would definitely recommend the Panasonic.

I bought the £40 Panasonic recently too.

Every loaf has been edable but recently after reading another post on here I have changed a few things.

Last two loafs have been great, so what did I change?

If making the medium loaf I put it on the large loaf setting, that has been the major change.

I also add two Vitamin C tablets mixing them into the water but have always been doing that.

When the end comes and it beeps at you I leave it in the machine for a further 10 - 15 mins.

Sorry to be so naive but what does the Vitamin C do? Haven't seen this mentioned in any recipes. I have just taken a loaf out of mine, wished I had read your post a few minutes earlier and I would have left in in the machine for another 10 - 15 mins, I always take it out as soon as the machine beeps.
