i made yoghurt (and from there, yoghurt cheese) yesterday/today, and its a) simple and b) gorgous. and i got to thinking.. how hard can regular cheese making be? so i went searching, found a site that has recipes but they all call for rennet.
so, here's my question, anyone any ideas where to get rennet from?
thanks in advance!

If a cows stomach is too nasty or unobtainable, then EBay has the answer http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rennet-for-Cheesemaking---Vegetarian_W0QQitemZ220182140045QQcmdZViewItem0

Might this be any help
Available at Waitrose
Langdale essence of rennet (100ml) 99 p
When we went on holiday to Sicily with our Italian language group, a local shepherd came to the agritourismo we were staying at and made us all fresh ricotta, which we all had a go at stirring in the kitchen in a huge pot - very hands on!
I'm sure he used rennet to make the curds seperate, the taste was absolutely wonderful. We ate a bowl of it warm at the start of the meal, it's something I will never forget. See what you've done, I feel very hungry now and wishing I could go back to Sicily.
(Also a Vegetarian 'Rennet' called VegeRen is available)0 -

Quite right, this is the same as junket, as in "Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet.....etc etc. "
When I was a kid you could still by Miss Muffet Junket, which was flavoured/coloured rennet - very tasty too, much better than disgusting blancmange!

i don't think there's a waitrose anywhere near me, but thankyou anyway. I've emailed the company from the ebay listing above to ask how long their veggie rennet lasts. With luck it'll keep for ages in the fridge and then i can get some and start making my own cheese!! (whether it'll turn out cheaper than cheap-as-chips cheese is something else of course).

That's right - I had forgotten junket! Dad used to make it, the trick was to let it set in the warm & then chill it.0

I bought it at Waitrose to make junket.
My great-grandmother always used to say that junket was the nicest way of taking milk, or so my dad says. No-one in my family liked it, well, I thought is was fine, but in my opinion yogurt is much nicer -and of course vegetarian0 -
HJ....warm ricotta...mmmmmmm would have to be Sardinian for me!

i work at tesco and we sell it via the pharmacy. we sell the 'stones essence of rennet' can remember how much it is but not expensive. we order it from our pharmacy wholesaler rather than tesco so should be easy to obtain if you order it.0
