The Little Things ...

On days when being OS doesn't feel like it's bringing it's own rewards, it's sometimes the little things which make it all seem soooo worthwhile.
D11yo asked what's in the lunchbox today ... among other things, I said "sticky gingerbread" (baked yesterday)
D11yo beamed, did a little :j and said: "Can't wait to share that around the table!"
I asked why he's sharing his lunch around
D11yo - "I always do that when you make something new ... I break off teeny bits and tell my mates to have a taste
"
Me: "Why do you do that, son?"
D11yo - "Because I'm so PROUD!" :j :j
*lump in throat* ... that was worth more than a Gold Medal
Having moaned on here about getting stuck into baking in my teeny kitchen in the heat yesterday, that one small comment made me feel it was worthwhile.
So ... what little things have perked you up and made you think ... yeah, it's all worth it!?

Ahhh, that's so sweet and justifies all your hard work. 2 weeks ago we went to Pizza Hut for a treat out. My OH decided that the pizzas we make at home are much better. Quite often he does actually make the HM pizzas, but at first he wasn't sure when I said I was going to buy a breadmaker. And now...he loves it to bits.
All I have to do now is convert my step daughters when we have them for a week over the summer....Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move
Lily contracted Strep B Meningitis Dec 2006  Now seemingly a normal little monster.
Love to my two angels that I will never forget.0 -
Its so nice when they say things like that. I remember hosting a 4th birthday party for my oldest daughter, with bouncy castle and games and party food. There were plenty of adults there too, which I thought would take the pressure off me and be a help. Boy was I wrong! All the adults stood around chatting and constantly asking me for another drink/cup of tea whilst I ran round trying to occupy the kids and keep them happy!
After they had all gone I sat in a chair in the garden, exhausted and annoyed, breathed a huge sigh and thought "Why on earth did I bother!!!!" My daughter, Sarah, then came running up to me and said "Thank you mum, that was a BRILLIANT party!" and gave me a hug! Now she has never been one for compliments and doesn't like hugging people, even at the age of four. So, in that moment, I knew that it was all worth it and I suddenly felt appreciated again!0 -
awh bless, that's adorable Queenie
Being surrounded by friends that wilfully cannot cook I often get praise, but last night I was told that my Rhubarb crumble was the best my friend had ever eaten and he's trying to invite himself over to eat more of it
. No one ever praises you or wants to come back fo shop bought...
Pre O/S: what's a vitamin? Does it begin with the letter e?Now: I'm not eating any of that pre-made rubbish...0 -
On St Patricks day my sons scout troupe had an 'Irish' night. They all had to bring something in. Ds1 came home and asked me to cook a pot of Irish stew, which not only takes time but is not the cheapest to make  .......anyway I did it.
When I picked him up I asked what every one else had brought.....'oh a bunch of shamrock, a can of guiness etc etc'. When I wondered out loud why I had had to provide stew to feed 30 boys, he proudly announced that he'd volunteered because my stew is the best he's ever tasted and he wanted his friends to see what a good cook his mum was...........funnily enough, after that I would have happily cooked another pot

Yesterday when I got home from physio OH said "we've not got much lemonade left. Can you make some more?" "oh you like it then" i said "oh yes...." he beamed......... that was nice (and hence the 3 litres!!)
(although there was a very funny smell coming from my blender so I'm a bit worried in case I'm over-using it......)
Also, when I was a Brownie Guider and my Mum was still alive (she was definitely OS) and my Unit Helper we used to have a proper OS party every Christmas, sandwiches, stuff on sticks, jelly & ice-cream etc. - the food was always demolished and the year I was away for six months they didn't have one and sooo many of them complained when I returned that they didn't have a party and that ours were always lovely and they had really missed it! Made me feel quite smug!!
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green0 -
My 9 Year old step-daughter, who I have had a weekends and now school holidays has always made me uneasy regarding cooking for her. She's never really had "real" food until i started to look after her 5 years ago and it's taken years to persuade her that what she gets is what she's eating.
However, a couple of weeks ago she had to go back to her mum's before Sunday Lunch, and got really upset.
When asked what was up she said, I've got to wait 3 weeks before I get a proper sunday dinner.
I felt really smug:j0 -
Foreverskint: Well, I think we all know what standing you're going to have in her memory banks thenBut I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green0

A couple of Christmas's back I offered to bake the Christmas Cake for MIL as we were to be there for Christmas and I thought it would take some of the pressure off her. That Christmas I discovered that FIL loves homebaking as its now my job to supply the Christmas Cake whenever we're there for Christmas
Just a few weeks back when I had a major baking session I had too much to fit in my freezer so I took 3 cakes to MIL's as a contribution to the family BBQ. FIL hid all 3 of them so he could take them to work in his packed lunch :rotfl:
Last week I gave my dad a bunch of scones for Fathers Day which apparently had nearly all gone by Sunday afternoon and FIL will be getting some baking (and lettucewhich he's requested) as a later Fathers Day come birthday pressie when he comes down early July. I just need to do another HUGE baking shop beforehand
Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0
