Also
I have bought a joint of beef..and its the one that cant be cooked in the oven (forgot the name they use for it) and can only be done in a slow cooker..so how would i do this? Going to cook it with vegetables but how much water do i put in it to cook with the beef?

    Hi- have you tried vegboxschemes.co.uk

We get one from Mossley in Lancs which I found through that site

Also veg-box recipes.co.uk is greatand also has links to providers- there's a few in Lancs- depends where you are!

Can't help with the beef though- sorry!

You can cook any joint of beef in an oven ;) If it's topside or a rolled brisket it is best not roasted but pot-roasted in a casserole with some liquid and veg. You can do this in an oven as easily as in a slow-cooker. Ovens are really good for slow-cooking meat, better than a slow cooker as they concentrate the juices and add flavour by allowing the meat and veg to brown and develop crusty bit. And, you don't have to fiddle about afterwards trying to thicken the juice with cornflour or reduce it on the hob.

Slow cookers are not better at cooking things than an oven, but they are cheaper to run and great if you want a hot meal ready after a hard day at work.

    Hi Rebecca,

Thriftlady beat me to it :D .

But if you want to cook it in a slow cooker it does come out lovely, this is how I do it, put meat in SC, put water in up to a third of the meat, add a few chunks of carrot and a quartered onion, put lid on and leave.
When meat is done it will be very tender, and delicious, I use the cooking stock to make gravy with, just fish out the carrot and onion, and add gravy granuals, and keep stiring, makes the best gravy.

    Enjoy

  • Can I just give my tuppence worth re the beef. If it is brisket, I just brown the roast in a little oil in the frying pan, then sit it on top of the veggies in the sc. I don't add any water, and I am getting a lot of the best ever beef stock from this method. I hadn't had a decent roast beef for so long that I had stopped buying it, until I found the slow cooker suggestions on this site.

I put my veg in the bottom of the SC, must include carrots and onions :) and put the beef on top. put enough stock in to cover the veg. incidentally, my SC book says not to use it without liquid

    hth ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

    And celery :D

Only add parsnips if you want a "sweetness" to the finished stock/gravy. Leafy greens tend not to add much to the flavour, so stick with root veg.

When cooked, take out all the remaining liquid and veg. Mash them all together or blitz with a blender - gravy!
