Reclaiming scrap metal.

Options
The company I work for have a large quantity of product that contains copper, brass, steel and plastic. They don't want to chuck it in the skip - they are an ethical company but it is too small an amount for them to take apart and recycle.I have said I'd do it - for personal gain - but where can I take it to for cash? I have calculated it to be about 150 kilos of copper/brass (50/50).Does anybody know if there are metal-workers or smithies that might be interested?Cheers,S.

I don't know about metal-workers or smithies, but you could look in the yellow pages for Scrap Merchants.

At the lower end of the market, any scrap merchant or car salvager would buy it when clean. You need to find out who he sells to. Maybe googling 'metal dealers buckinghampshire' would thro up something.

Electrical opper is about £2-3 per kilo from the scrap metal merchant, they would double their money to the main distributor.

Dont throw out those old TV's and microwaves, plenty of copper components to salvage, approx 400-500g from a microwave. It all adds up!!!

The secret is out folks, dont forget to wear gloves when stripping the internals of electrical items, there are nasty sharp edges inside.

I do this with scrap that I acquire from my jobs and renovation projects.

I'm lucky that I have a scrap yard that receives all sorts about a mile away from where I live.

You need to be very efficient at reducing scrap to produce, if it is worth it, as the time taken to strip some things can outweigh the additional money you get for weighing it in. For example bear copper goes for about 4 times as electrical cable does but stripping the insulation off halves the weight and takes for ever. I've tried. So you really only get twice what you would have and then need to chuck out the stripped insulation. Stripping it pays around £3 per hour if that!

When I was a lad we used to burn it off, but that was in the late 60's early 70's.
