I would start by looking into veg box schemes. The great thing about these is that you can usually set it up so that the box just turns up with no involvement from you. This means that you can not be tempted to buy anything extra and just have to make do with what is in the box. (You can get meat boxes too but I've never tried them.) For everything else I'd use anywhere local for milk and do an online shop (say) monthly fo rthings like washing powder. I've found that keeping an ongoing list of stuff I've run out of and then typing in that list to the search box on the web site means that you don't "browse" so you can't be tempted to buy more. If you use a comparision site (mysupermarket.co.uk) then you can price check it all and it suggests swops to get it cheaper so you do not miss out on BOGOFs or anything. Also with washing powder do try reducing how much you use each wash (same for dishwasher stuff) - we use far less than the recommended load and notie no differnece.
  • I have enjoyed reading this thread as i am trying to budget more, as i am fed up of waste and being taken in by marketing ploys. One of the things that i want to cut out is going to the Supermarket, i even find Tescos to be getting quite pricey at the moment, and i do not have much confidence in the quality of thieir goods and produce.

I have a local butcher and he is fab, and we visit a farm shop to get veg etc, although slightly dearer the quality is second to none. If we cant get to the farm shop then we have quite a good market where i can get our fruit and veg.

Can the people that have milk delivered let me know how much a pint is please? I have looked at doorstep deliveries as we use so much milk (having a 3 year old that drinks a pint a day, which i only encourage) and i am trying to work out if it is feasible to have it delivered or not, but there are no prices listed for milk on the web site.

    TIA

I think the price really does depend on 1. the milkman, 2. where you live,

I pay 46p per pint but I know other on MSE pay over 50p per pint:confused:I know its dearer than the supermarkets but its so nice having it delivered fresh in glass bottles, especially in winter if getting out is a problem due to the weather. Some have also reported that they don't get a delivery everyday so this again will depend on where you live. Could you maybe give them a ring to find out about prices and delivery? Ask about your neighbours or friends?

if i have to use a supermarket this month im going to lidl (10 min bus trip or other in town where i will use market for fruit/veg/potatoes)

i could get by using lidl as main shop, there nappies are not bad at all either

ive never tried the meat vans (there is 2) at salisbury market simply as im not sure how good the meat is iykwim

agree with whats been said about tesco, they seem to like placeing offers around the entrance (and they get me verytime)

    Hi fizzel,

I live in a village near Andover too, slighlty larger than the one you are in I think but also only a 10 min drive away from Lidl! ;)

I have tried the meat at Salisbury market and the one in the van in the corner is great. You can ask them to make you up a tray of what you want for £10 or £20 and it's quite good.

I have found that the fruit and veg stall in Andover is not really any cheaper than supermarkets or Lidl and hardly anything is local! Also the meat van in Andover market is ok, you can do the same there as in Salisbury.

When I go into say the butchers, I always ask for the amount of meat I want in money rather than in weight, ie, £2.00 of lamb mince, chicken about £6.00 so that I know how much it is going to cost and can still stick to within my budget.

Seems silly but I had never thought of this :o Will definitely be shopping this way next time I'm at the butchers, thanks!

I have not been going to tesco for nearly a year, however I do shop online, using the money off codes for free delivery. I think by not going into the shop saves a load of money.

I have started using our farm shop, it is next door to us. It only sells veg, I have been buying a massive basket of organic eggs for £2.40 and they are great and last for ages.

I am mulling over that veg box thing, but don't know where you get them from?? does anyone know, thanks

Fizzel, I've bought off the meat van at Wilton market in the past - he's not cheap, cheap, but his meat is good.
