Should the Police have a right to strike?

There is a lot in the papers lately about the Police pay dispute.
Basicly HMG have refused to honour an arbitrated agreement, which should be binding.
As a result the Police are propossing to obtain the right to strike. Which would probably mean going to the Court of European rights. I think we are the only country whose Police cannot strike, but I may be wrong.
I do not think they should go on strike, but understand the reason for them wanting the right to do so; as they have no bargaining power.
I am very interested to find out what payrise our M.P's are going to vote for themselves.

No, and they have a right to decent pay and this should be decided by none political independent parties and the government should honour what increase is decided.

Well it seems its one rule for one and another for the politicians who claim they are a professional body yet no other body I know of gets voted in

MP's also decide how much of a pay rise they give themselves. They always give themselves a bigger pay rise than the give others.

They claim to be a professional body so they can find one that has pay scales above that of an MP, then they claim they are "on a par" with this professional body and just gave themselves a big pay rise to bring their wages up to the level of that professional body.

No, but it does take years of working the system to get in a situation where you can be elected

    But back to the police.
If you can't , legally, withdraw your labour then your salary should be determined by an independent pay review body that both sides agree to. However, unsurprisingly, governments of all persuasions have ignored there recommendations.
Its a catch 22 situation. Pay the recommendations & spend more tax payers money or encourage public sector pay restraint & get re-elected (maybe not quite that simple but you catch the drift)

Not always but usually it does, but that doesn't make you a professional and when you are a MP you have staff who are employed to take on the day to day tasks granted it may not be a easy job but it does have its perks

  • While I think every worker has a right to strike over grievances, essential services are essential for a reason. Maybe Police can have some kind of limited striking rights like as having to perform basic duties only?

They have a work to rule option, which means they only respond to absolute emergencies. I'm not sure if they have done it before??
I think a 1.9% payrise to our police is a disgrace in the least. How can they justify not honouring an agreement that has been in place for many many years. They were only getting a 2.5% rise in the first place but to knock 0.6% off that is laughable.
I will support the police in any work to rule and hope them criminals run rife so they realise their exact worth and pay them fairly. I proberbly dont quite mean all of that but it makes me mad!!
