Any tips for new compers?

Hi everyone!

I've been comping for about a year now and have been lucky enough to win some really amazing prizes along the way! One of my favourite things about comping is how lovely and generous the community is, especially when it comes to sharing competitions and helping each other out.

I'm always looking for ways to improve, so I thought I'd ask those of you who've been comping for a while: what are some tips or tricks you wish you'd known when you first started?

Whether it's the best websites to find competitions, lesser-known places to look, ways to stay organised, or little tricks that have worked well for you, I'd love to hear them!

And hopefully this thread can help other newbies too! 😊🍀

my tip is to open a new email account, yahoo, hotmail or google. Use that just for competitions. I get on average 400 emails a day to my comping account which I scan the title and first line for winning emails then mass delete them. This means my regular email isn't clogged with spam and I can see important emails.

How long does it generally take to win something, I've been entering most comps posted on here for a month now, and nothing currently 🙃

Although some comps notify you very quickly, you may need to wait days or weeks after the closing date of a competition to hear if you have won. As to how long it takes to win something, well that is really just down to luck most of the time. You may win the first comp you enter, or you may not win a thing for a couple of years. The trick is to enter many competitions and persevere despite no result. Over the years I have won hundreds of competitions, from cars to holidays and large cash prizes, but during the mid-2000s there were three consecutive years when I won absolutely nothing, not even a plastic apron, despite entering about 1500 comps per month. Almost gave up, then won a "cellar full of wine" (150 bottles) and a nice holiday all within a couple of weeks. Treat this as a casual hobby with no real expectation of winning any particular competition, enter and forget. Then, when you do get a Winning EMail, or even an unexpected letter or prize through the post, it is a brilliant surprise and makes up for all the waiting. Keep going and eventually you will win.

You need patience and perseverance - when you're not winning it's easy to feel deflated, demotivated and fatigued and you fall off the wagon. The wins will continue to not come if you don't keep trying.

All the best and good luck!
