Civil service pension whilst still working

My wife has a classic civil service pension payable from 60 she worked 15 years leaving in 2012 and is now 55 and working outside the civil service. I know there may be tax implications but can she carry on working post 60 and claim and receive her civil service pension?

As long as she is not working for an employer that uses the Civil Service pension scheme for her pension, she can work elsewhere and receive a Civil Service pension. That is the case whether she were to claim it now at age 55 with actuarial reduction, or at 60.

If she worked elsewhere past 60 and did not claim her Classic Civil Service pension, she would receive back-dated payments to age 60 when she claimed it. Those arrears would then be taxable at the date paid (and she could apply to HMRC to have them reallocated to the relevant past year(s) if she wished), but having them taxed in the future year may be desirable depending on her tax position.

if she was working for a CS organisation she’d probably need to partially retire, so reduce her pay by 20% or more, but if not, then as above she can take it, though reduced if under 60. Brace yourself for wait though, as capita are up a creek without a paddle.
