Hello Thank you for your reply. They have had the card for many years, I don't know how long exactly but over 22 I am guessing, they don't remember. I may have the paperwork somewhere but likely in the loft..

Thank you for your help. Yes, we have looked into this but can't get Universal Credit or Pension credit or anything else other than Attendance Allowance and Carers Allowance.

I'd suggest you ask for the write off. You'll need medical evidence. That'll take a lot of pressure of you if the response is positive. But take a bit of time.
Can I ask if this account is with the same bank as originally issued it 22 years ago. Or has the original bank been taken over etc?

Hello! It's an MBNA credit card

Well the letter is written. That was so difficult - and is hard thinking about not paying anything but will save what I would have paid in my emergency funds. I have printed off a couple of medical documents as evidence and covered up anything too personal. I will let you know how I get on.
Thank you all for you help.

Once you do this, its imperative you stick to your guns, if they come back to you with some kind of repayment plan, you must reject it, and hold out for the right off, do not be swayed by anything they might say, your goal is getting the debt written off, nothing else is acceptable.
You might find this is stupidly easy, or they make make a battle out of it, it will be interesting to see which.
But you will get there, keep us updated.

I have found some information on the history of the card, the MBNA card was actually originally a Virgin Card from roughly 2007 which changed to MBNA on October 2013.

Thank you! I will let you know as soon as I get a reply from them and hope that it will be an easy process. But the way things go with us I'm not holding my breath.

OK, that might help. When people sign up they have to sign a contract under the Consumer Credit Act. If the current creditor can't produce it, then they can't pursue the debt in court which means it doesn't need to be paid. Older debts which have changed hands are less likely to be documented.
The rules will change next year and we don't know what will happen to older debts that have already been found unenforceable. See how the write off goes and then look, if that doesn't work.

Thank you so much for that information!
