Am i making the right choice

I have been in my current job for 21 months hgv driving. I have had a new job offer at a local steelworks driving plant machinery better hourly rate and more holidays per year. Only downfall is it’s one week nights and one week days. The days week is Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 12hrs and 8hrs on the Friday. Week 2 is 12hr nights Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. I have been driving HGV’s for 15+ years and definitely fed up of it my current job is job and knock some days could be 8 hours some days can be 10 hours. I have accepted the job but my mind is playing games as i have not yet put my notice in lol. Should i just go for it what would others do in my position.

Could you re-train as a mechanic? No night shifts then.

12 hour shifts are long particulary as you are working them back to back which really eats into you off time as you are meant to have 11 hours rest between shifts,

I would be interested in their safety record

If you have a home life and family you can forget about them on work days but you might be used to this as HGV driver

My Husband used to work 12 hour shifts, I'd say it's a young person's game, I think I'd find switching from days to nights hard, but then I guess there's plenty that do it for their whole working life

Would that working pattern suit you?

Think what you wouldn’t be able to do with these working hours?

Family commitments, Meeting mates, hobbies etc

I doubt the long hours are much different to HGV driving but there are pro's and con's. You will be home for some part of every day and you will know your working hours. Is that true in the HGV job? Downside is the 12 hour shifts which can take it out of you.

HGV drivers are in short supply so presumably it wouldn't be difficult to find a job if you wanted to go back to HGV driving. Is there anything to lose by giving the other job a try and see how you get on?
