Mattress is too hard

Hello, I have a problem and I hope someone can help! I got a new mattress after researching what my options were and selecting what seemed like a good match. The first one wasn't for me - it was advertised as medium firm but felt more like a rock! Great if you want a firm mattress but I, a side sleeper, need a soft one. That's the problem.

I am on a strict low budget and all the mattresses actually labelled "soft" that I could find are out of that budget. I have had to compromise on a medium mattress and though it's softer than my first attempt it too is too hard. As per a previous tip from here years ago, I have a couple of double duvets folded under me (it's a single bed) but that is not doing the trick with this new mattress.

What is the best tip or best topper (or anything) I can add to make my mattress combo soft enough to sleep on for me?

I currently have a box divan, 21 cm spring mattress with foam top section (hybrid), two old double duvets, and two single duvets under me and I can still feel that darn pea. Previously I had two thinner mattresses that were pretty basic spring mattresses. The height of this combo is almost too much for me to get onto without a step so I can't really just keep adding duvets! (The step isn't great for me as I am not super mobile.)

Every disposal costs me £25 and I've already had to pay for two (busted ones) so I need to keep the mattress and divan for now.

Ideally my budget to fix this is not more than £60, which is a firm ceiling. Like that mattress :(

Thank you in advance for any helpful ideas and absolutely no hate to the Firm Mattress People.

I had a similar problem, ordered a mattress which I thought was right for me, but it proved to be too firm. A memory foam mattress topper changed everything, and it’s quite thin so wouldn’t be adding to the height much.

If you search online, Good Housekeeping did a review of mattress toppers in August, and their ‘best budget’ option would be well within your range, however I’d recommend memory foam if you can afford it.
