i-pod out of warranty

Hi
My son bought an ipod for £190 from HMV in Dec 06 and it has stopped working just outside the warranty period, as usual!
I think I heard that there are new statuary rights where you can expect a product to last a reasonable amount of time, does anybody know if this applies to MP3 players and if so how long it would be for. It has only had general wear and tear and I'm not happy with him spending the money again so soon after he bought the 1st one.
TIA
Mr T

This is a big problem with Ipods. just do a search on google and one of the draw backs is that it breaks or the battery dies after just year. Some would say its Steve Jobs building obsolescence into apples products but he wouldn't do that would he?
;)
I would:
a: Look on the internet and try and find a fix.
b: Take it back to the shop, plead ignorance, kick up a stink.
c: Dont buy an Ipod again.0 -
Don't worry about the warranty, it is in addition to your statutory rights,(not in place of them), you are covered under the Sale of Goods Act, (SoGA),these are not new wand gave been around for years, for up to 6 years depending on product, cost etc.
Take it back to the RETAILER, not the manufacturer as your contract is with the retailer.
If you have no joy,( as they will try to fob you off), contact Consumer Direct for more info on your rights;-
Consumer Direct is designed to operate from our 0845 number, so we cannot guarantee connectivity, but under many circumstances these landline numbers will work correctly.
East of England: 01438 737460
East Midlands: 01522 563000
London: 020 8799 9200
North-East: 01642 495600

Consumers who call Consumer Direct from a mobile phone are handled personally. We will offer to text a landline number to consumers who call us from a mobile phone, and who live in an area that is served by Consumer Direct, because calls from mobile phones to 0845 numbers can be much more expensive.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

I have been thinking of buying an Ipod and noticed on eBay there are two companies that can repair them. I don't think they were expensive, I would kick up a fuss ( don't accept one at half price ) and if not perhaps check out eBay.
This did happen to me but the retailer 'Amazon' said as a gesture of goodwill ( after trying in vain with Apple direct ) it would sort it out and refunded me straight away and just asked me to post it once I receive a return envelope in the post. No rush no problem.
Oooooh just remembered it was HMV? Keep us postedHelp me to help you :santa2:0 -
If all else fails, you can try selling the faulty ipod on ebay. I did this with one that I had - someone bought it for £35. I know it's not what you paid for it, but every little helpsGetting older is inevitable, growing up is optional :rotfl:0

Do what i do, lol, Buy a new one use it as normal for 2 weeks then use the new receipt to take back the old one, he he works on almost anything also handy if you have lost your recipet then you can request a refund ha ha0

Have you tried the troubleshooting/ discussion boards on the apple site and taking it into the genius bar at the apple shop? They check and repair it for free- my dad got an ipod years ago (the first model) and it started acting up and it got sorted for free as did mine0

get it repaired... depending on the fault it shouldnt be too expensive...0

not sure about buying a new one then using the receipt to take the old one back? i used to sell games consoles and mobiles and someone tried to do this to me with a ps2 but the serial number of the product is logged in a companies computer and when i checked the product the serial code was wrong so i knew we'd not sold it to him, then there's the problem of explaining why you want a refund on a £200 product which you only bought 2 weeks ago, they'll wonder why you don't want a replacement or repair. I would stick to checking if MP3's come under new legislation and if not then if your son wants a new one he has to buy it, it;'s harsh but we know companies don't build products to last these days!0

Have you tried re-booting it??
If it has frozen then just hold Menu and Center button in at the same time fir about 5 seconds. Screen will go blank and then re-boot.
Another possible problem is that an update has not taken well. connect to I-Tunes site, go to my I-Pod and click reset to factory settings on the main page.
