HMRC haven't included my pension in self-employed tax calculation

I'm self-employed and get a relatively small pension from the Local Government scheme.

I've just been through the process of completing my tax return online with HMRC and during the process, as usual, I could see that they already knew the amount of my pension.

The difference is that this time the end result was a tax calculation that didn't include my pension amount and so it's wrong and I'm being asked for less tax than normal.

I've put a comment in the "other information" section about this in order to draw it to their attention.

Has the system changed since I last used it because I've never previously had this problem?

Go back and check the pension income section is included in the filing.

You can amend a tax return very easily if you have filed on the HMRC site and not use third party software.

Odd that your LGPS pension isn't being taxed at source. When it was first brought into payment, they would have, at least, applied a notional tax code pending confirmation of your actual code.

    Thanks for those responses

I've been back into my submission and altered it to add the missing pension

The fact I'm paid a pension without deduction of tax is probably to do with me being self-employed - I guess taxing at source would be complex because my self-employed earnings vary.

My tax owed figures have now increased to what I'd have expected so all looks well - if a little bit depressing!!!😉

Have you entered your pension details on your self assessment return?

Your pension will have a tax code applied to it. You should be able to see what it is if you log into your personal tax account and look at the PAYE bit.

The fact that no tax is deducted is probably more to do with the amount of pension being below your personal allowance than it being "too difficult" because of variable self employment income.

I’m self employed and my military pension isn’t taxed at source, I have to account for it under self assessment.
