Training pathways - new career options

Morning all, hope you’re good!

I’m embracing a change of work situation i.e redundancy. I feel like I’ve been sat in the same career route for the past 14 years (customer service/education) and I’m actually seeing this as the perfect opportunity to change.

I want to get back into information and guidance which I did for 2 years but left due to a bereavement during Covid. I miss helping people directly, so something along the lines of counselling or advocacy work again.

I was wondering if anyone had any input on how they’ve managed to do a u turn and re-train in another area? I’ll speak to a careers coach but just wondering how easy it is. I keep seeing incentives about AI training courses but definitely avoiding that!

I did contact the job centre on the rapid response service for risk of redundancy. I have to say I found them so unhelpful so feel I’m navigating things myself. As I have savings, another option could be to continue in current career path part time and re-train in another area. It feels daunting but exciting at the same time! Thanks for any input! x

job centre is useless when it comes to helping people find jobs despite it's name.

Have a look on your local council website for employment support, they will either have their own services most likely funded by government, mine does or their will be links to local organisations.

I moved from care home management to advocacy (which by the way is a lot less well-paid than care home management) my virtue of some voluntary work and simply having the right attitude and values and transferable skills I then did training on the job. It was a sideways move more than a completely new start in a different field.

Perhaps you need to do a proper skills audit and take it from there.

Complete agree that the job centre spectacularly unhelpful.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have not could of.
