Self assessment return submission failed

Today I submitted my self assessment return for 20025/26 but received the message "A
problem occurred when you sent your return"

Logged back in later this morning saw "There was a problem and your return was not submitted. We have saved it automatically and you can submit it again by clicking Next"

I clicked on next but did not get any message to say submission was successful. But when I view tax options page for 2025/26 it shows

Submitted on: 24 Sep 2026

Received on: Not Yet Received

I'm confused, has the return been submitted or not?

What notification should I receive for successful submission?

Thanks

If you entered an email address you should, almost instantly, get a submission receipt to that email.

As time is not critical, leave it for a few days and see if the status changes.

I submitted my tax return earlier this week. On the screen I got a submission acknowledgement number and about 20 minutes later an email confirmation of submission.

Within 48 hours I had a change of tax code based on a change made to my employment on the tax return.

The problem is you're living in the future, HMRC will receive it in a few thousand years :)

6 hours after submission I got an email. Now have to wait up to72 hours for final outcome

Is 72 hours a realistic or likely to be longer?
